ETHNIC ROOTS

Our Cuban heritage is like a puzzle of many colors and shapes. Aborigines, Spanish

and other European, African, Chinese, Jewish, Arab, Yucatecos and North American

roots make this wonderful and vibrant colorful collage which we call Cuban.

One of our cornerstone programs of the Cuban Family History and Genealogy

Project is our Ethnic Roots Lecture and Program Series. This program series will

be an ongoing celebration showcasing a collection of documents, research,

bibliography, and family histories of a specific Cuban ethnic group.

The objective is to commemorate and document the contribution of these groups in

the creation and development of our Island nation. The series will examine the

various Spanish regional groups such as the Asturians, Basques, Catalans, Canary

Islanders, Galicians among others, as well as those of African, Chinese, Middle

Eastern and Eastern European descent.

A number of lectures will be conducted during the year in partnership with Herencia

Cultural Cubana presenting these various ethnic groups. Sponsors and

underwriters will be sought out to support these ongoing ethnic series and

collections.

The March 2006 inaugural program of the Ethnic Roots Lecture and Program Series

celebrated the contribution of the Basques to the economic and social progress of

Cuba; and presented the family history and chronicles of the late Don Francisco

Saralegui Arrizubieta (1898-1973), former President of the Centro Vasco de la

Habana.
